Who: All kids who would like to learn more about being healthy between the ages of five
and sixteen.

When:  Sunday, May 3rd 2009. 11am.

Where:  At and around the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center.

Why? Get fit, learn about your community, make friends, and be a part of something big.

The Nitty Gritty:   How far is 26.2 miles?  Does it sound far?  It’s a little bit longer than the distance between Mt. Tahoma High School and the SeaTac airport.  Can you run it?  I think you can.

You’re starting on a marathon race against yourself to improve your health!  Exercise might sound like something that hurts, or something you don’t think you have time for, maybe even something that you just plain don’t want to do.  Exercise can be as fun as you want it to be!  Ever go to a school dance?  You exercised!  Ever run to catch the bus?  Exercised again!  How about swimming in the summertime?  You guessed it.  You even exercised then.

Exercise can help your body by building stronger muscles and bones; you probably knew that already.  But guess what else exercise can do?  It can help you sleep better at night.  It can help you focus more in school.  It can even help you crave healthier foods that your body needs to get stronger and stronger.  Exercise really is A-OK.

There are a lot of things you can do to become healthier.  You can run.  You can jump rope.  You can swim, walk, hike, bike, and even skip.  But how about exercising your brain and your heart?  They need some attention too.

Exercise your brain by reading a book.  Exercise your heart by helping someone with something.  Exercise both by reading a book to a younger child who may not yet know how to read.  Exercise is sounding better and better, isn’t it?

On Sunday, May 3rd, you’ll run 1.2 miles with a group of exercisers just like you to complete your marathon.  Before you run this race, you’ll have completed 25 tasks on your own (or find a friend to race with!).  You get to pick the activities you’ll do, like running, swimming, helping your parents, reading a book on being healthy, volunteering somewhere, or anything else you can think of that is exercising some part of your body (head, heart, legs).  When you finish, you’ll have exercised 26.2 ‘miles’, just like a real marathon!  Did you think you could ever do it?  Surprise yourself!
